Managing Editor, Blavity

Job Description

Blavity Inc. is seeking a top-performing Managing Editor of Blavity to join our organization.  The Managing Editor will head the Blavity brand, working closely with our Editorial, Marketing, and Creative teams to achieve scale while growing the Blavity brand web platform and social presence. The candidate will be integral in helping create content strategies, maximize page views, drive reader engagement and increase newsletter subscribers through directing an Editorial team.

We are looking for a highly motivated multi-tasker to optimize the workflow and output of the Editorial team. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of editorial experience in the digital space and be passionate about the company’s mission to empower and inspire Black millennials and Gen Z both through its media properties and on our own team.

The Managing Editor of Blavity will report directly to the Associate Director of Editorial Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Associate Director of Editorial Operations to execute overall editorial strategy, including implementing newly-set content strategies and tracking editorial traffic goals and KPIs
  • Assist with managing writers by providing guidance on day-to-day editorial needs, including content approval and headline suggestions
  • Develop a comprehensive brand content calendar and manage editorial workflow
  • Serve as final decision-maker on which stories, articles, photographs, and headlines are published
  • Meet with cross-functional personnel to provide updates on progress of editorial team
  • Ensure all copy is in line with brand guidelines, is void of inaccuracies, and has proper brand voice, context, and balance
  • Serve as project manager for brand’s editorial initiatives
  • Perform research related to brand development and assist in sourcing talent for new verticals as needed
  • Develop, manage and adhere to budgets for the Editorial team
  • Hire and develop new writers and editors
  • Meet key page view and audience growth KPI targets

Qualifications

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Media, or related field
  • Required Experience:  5+ years of editorial experience in the digital space
  • Technologies:
    • Fluent in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Asana, and/or comparable project management suite
    • Experience tracking and extracting metrics using Google Analytics
  • Additional Qualifications:

Details: This is a fully remote role, occasional travel may be required. Candidates must be available to work at least 75% in alignment with the Eastern Time Zone
